Transition Year Students represent Marist at Linguistics Olympiad
Dónal Mischo, Jonathan Lynn, David McCarthy and Shane McDonnell from St. Mary's College qualified to represent the school at the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) held in D.C.U. this year. The students participated in individual and team competitions on language comprehension and reasoning. They found it "Challenging and interesting, in particular deciphering codes in languages you've never heard about." It was the first time students from the college had taken part in the competition and we look forward to continued participation in the future.

Planet Earth competition

The earth is quaking around St. Mary's College because the school beat off stiff competition to become the proud owner of a Seismometer, which is being used to measure seismic activity around the globe.

The 2008-2009 Transition Year Geography students, with the aid of their teachers Anita White and Pippa Brady, submitted a DVD of the various environmental initiatives being run within the school.  All the hard work was recognized when they were declared to be the winners of the RTE National Competition to promote the 'International Year of Planet Earth'.

St. Mary's has become part of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) initiative to promote the study of the Earth Sciences in Irish schools, and in particular the study of seismology. RTE are due to visit the college to observe the instrument in operation in the school environment.

The Colleges Geography and Physics departments are delighted with their new acquisition, which allows students to observe global earthquakes in the classroom. The school community is also eagerly awaiting the arrival of the national broadcasters to the school later in the year

Seachtain Na Gaeilge In The Marist
The Students of Transition Year in Saint Mary's College had a busy week during Seachtain Na Gaeilge. Students took part in many activities during the week, such as Bingo as Gaeilge, shamrock face painting for 50c and quiz's, from which the funds would be going towards new headphones for the schools computers to create an Irish language lab.

Six students, along with their Irish teacher Ms.Hughes, took part in Ríth 2010, which is a relay where a baton is taken all around Ireland and switches hands every kilometer. It begins in Co.Down  and goes through all four Provinces and 15 counties to where it finished in Co.Galway. The school bought one of the kilometers along the route that went from the Park Inn Hotel to The Lisdoo restaurant where the baton was then handed over to Coláiste Rís Secondry School.

Transition Years also organised a Quiz for first years  that was all as Gaeilge and was a great success. Students were also sponsored to speak Irish for an entire day.

The school will also be holding their annual interviews for the Fáinne, which is a gold or silver badge that students receive to show that they can speak the Irish language.

Marist Student wins National Business Competition
Dónal Mischo a Transition Year Student from St. Mary's College was delighted when he won the top prize in a business competition run by the Sunday Business Post. Participants had to send in the answers to 20 tough business-related questions in hope of winning the new HP Probook 4510 laptop. Dónal was thrilled when he got the call from the Editor of the Post saying he'd won. "The questions were very tricky, for example, looking up the value of shares on a specific day. But I'm so happy I stuck at it. The prize was really worth it!" he said.

Sixth Place in World Junior Science Olympiad in Azerbaijan
Transition Year is certainly a year Jonathan Lynn will remember. In November 2009, Jonathan participated in The Irish Junior Science Olympiad in DCU, sitting through a grueling three-hour examination that focused on biology, physics and chemistry and emerged victorious as he secured his place as one of the six students to compete for Ireland at international level in Azerbaijan in December.

Competing in the individual section in The World Junior Science Olympiad in Azerbaijan was an amazing experience for Jonathan as he mingled with the top science students from around the world. The blend of personalities and culture as well as the experience of the challenge of competition itself was certainly something that he will never forget. Jonathan arrived home from Azerbaijan sporting a bronze medal, which places him in the top 3% in the world in his category. St Mary's College, particularly the TY group of 09-10, join with his parents in being extremely proud of him. Congratulations Jonathan.
