Junior Cycle Curriculum

 

In St. Mary's College we operate a system of mixed ability in First Year. From Second Year onwards various subjects are taught in separate Higher or Ordinary level classes.

 

Core Subjects

Gaeilge (Irish), English, Maths, Religion, History, Geography, Science, CSPE, PE, SPHE.

 

Optional Subjects

Students choose three subjects to study for the Junior Cert. from the following: Art, Business Studies, French, German, Home Economics, Music, Materials Technology Wood, Technical Graphics, Technology .

 

First year Options

From September to Christmas, each first year student has a ‘Taster’ period of the following subjects:

Art, Business Studies, French, German, Home Economics, Music, Materials Technology Wood, Technical Graphics, Technology.

 

During this time they will also study the normal range of core subjects.

 

At the end of the Taster Period he/she will choose three of the above optional subjects for the Junior Certificate Examinations.

When the student has his/her subject choices confirmed, before the Christmas break, he/she will be allocated their weekly class periods for these subjects.

Core Subjects:

Gaeilge  (Irish),  English, Maths, Religion, PE, Career Guidance.

 

Optional Subjects

History, Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Business Studies, Accounting, Economics, French, German, Home Economics, Art, Music, Construction Studies, Design & Communication Graphics, Technology.

 

 

 

LCVP (Leaving Cert Vocational Programme) [Optional]

The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) combines the academic strengths of the Leaving Certificate (established) with a new and dynamic focus on self–directed learning, innovation and enterprise. Students complete a standard Leaving Certificate along with two Link Modules, which can enhance their overall points. They develop skills and competencies fundamental to both academic and professional/career success.
