Imeachtaí Gaeilge / Irish Language Activities

Tá sé mar aidhm ag Roinn na Gaeilge suim agus muinín sa Ghaeilge a chothú. Ba mhaith linn a chur in iúl do scoláirí gur teanga bhríomhar nua-aimseartha í a bhfuil an-chuid féidearthachtaí ag baint léi agus a bhfuil cultúr agus traidisiún láidir aici.

Tá súil againn paisean sa Ghaeilge a chothú agus cuirimid raon leathan deiseanna labhartha agus cultúrtha ar fáil le linn na bliana leis an teanga a chur chun cinn.

The Irish Department aims to foster interest and confidence in the Irish language. We aim to show students that it is a lively modern language with a strong culture and tradition that opens the door to many opportunities.

We hope to foster a passion for Irish and promote the language by providing a wide range of speaking and cultural opportunities for students during the year.

Céilí Mór

Is buaicphointe na scoilbhliana é an Céilí Mór. Tá an Céilí Mór ar an bhfód ón bhliain 1977 agus tá sé ina dhlúthchuid de shaol na scoile ó shin. Téann níos mó ná ceithre chéad scoláire chuig an céilí gach bliain agus is iontach go deo an ráchairt a bhíonn ar thicéid i gcónaí. Ceol, damhsa, comhluadar agus craic – is traidisiún thar a bheith luachmhar agus sultmhar é an Céilí, a mbíonn cuimhní cinn ag scoláirí air go deo. Tá sé i mbéal an phobail le fada agus ag dul ó neart go neart i gcónaí.

The highlight of the school year is the annual Céilí Mór. The Céilí Mór was first established in the year 1977 and has been an integral part of school life ever since. Over four hundred students attend the céilí each year and tickets are always in great demand. Ceol, damhsa agus craic – the Céilí is an invaluable tradition that students immensely enjoy and have memories of to treasure for years to come. It has continuously been the talked about event in the school calendar and continues to go from strength to strength.

Comórtais Chaint Phoiblí agus Díospóireachtaí / Public Speaking Competitions and Debating

Cuirtear béim ar Ghaeilge labhartha sa scoil agus spreagtar daltaí le páirt a ghlacadh i gcomórtais chaint phoiblí ar nós ‘Abair’ agus Díospóireachtaí Gael Linn. Cuidíonn an taithí seo le féinmhuinín agus scileanna labhartha agus idirphearsanta a chothú agus tá traidisiún láidir againn sna comórtais seo.

An emphasis is put on the spoken language in the school and students are encouraged to take part in public speaking competitions such as ‘Abair’ and Gael Linn Debates. Experience in this field helps to nurture self-confidence and speaking and interpersonal skills and we have a strong tradition in these competitions.

An Ghaeltacht

Molann Roinn na Gaeilge go mór do scoláirí freastal ar an nGaeltacht sa samhradh. Is tobar na teanga í an Ghaeltacht agus is í an áit is fearr le suim sa Ghaeilge a chothú agus le do chumas labhartha a fheabhsú. Feictear ardú díograise agus cumais sa Ghaeilge i scoláirí a fhreastalaíonn ar an nGaeltacht bliain i ndiaidh na bliana. Cuirtear roinnt scoláireachtaí ar fáil le cuidiú le scoláirí freastal ar an nGaeltacht sa samhradh.

The Irish Department strongly recommends that students attend the Gaeltacht in the summer. The true richness of the language can be fully appreciated there and the Gaeltacht is the best place to nurture an interest in the language and to improve speaking ability. Increased enthusiasm and vast improvements in linguistic ability are continuously noticed in those students that attend the Gaeltacht year after year. A number of part-scholarships are provided each year to assist students who wish to attend the Gaeltacht in the summer.

Turas go hInis Mór / Trip to Inis Mór

Bíonn deis ag scoláirí a dhéanann an Ghaeilge go leibhéal onóracha don Ardteist dul ar thuras go hInis Mór gach bliain. Faigheann na scoláirí blaiseadh iontach de shaol na Gaeltachta ann agus bíonn cúpla lá lán go béal le heachtraí suimiúla eagraithe dóibh.

Students that study Irish to honours level for the Leaving Certificate have an opportunity to go on the annual trip to Inis Mór. It gives students a great taste of Gaeltacht life and they participate in a jam-packed few days of activities.

An Cumann Gaelach / Irish Club

Eagraítear Cumann Gaelach agus ciorcal comhrá sa scoil ar bhonn seachtainiúil. Tugann seo seans do scoláirí an Ghaeilge a labhairt agus a chleachtadh taobh amuigh den seomra ranga ar bhonn neamhfhoirmeálta trí imeachtaí spraíúla a dhéanamh. Bíonn seans ag scoláirí páirt a ghlacadh in imeachtaí difriúla le linn na bliana, an Féile Scoildrámaíochta ina measc. Cuidíonn na scoláirí seo le cur chun cinn na Gaeilge sa scoil fosta.

The Cumann Gaelach and conversation circle meet on a weekly basis. It gives students a chance to speak and practice their Irish in an informal manner outside the classroom through taking part in fun activities. Students have a chance to take part in different activities during the year including 'an Féile Scoildrámaíochta' / the Irish language drama festival. These students also help to promote the Irish language in the school.
