Soccer

Marist soccer 1987-2006.

Since the inception of secondary schools soccer in the North East Leinster area in 1987, the Marist has participated in all competitions, with some degree of success. The sport has proved popular with students and for many years the school has entered teams for boys at under 13, under 14, under 16 and under 18 levels.

The school plays its league games in the Louth/Meath/North Co Dublin area and enters into the cup competitions which are organised on a knockout basis      on the provincial basis. The schools is able to promote soccer as the game is very popular in the Dundalk area, and the grounds the Marist have are amongst the most impressive in Leinster.

The schools record in soccer is very impressive .We have won boys cups in Leinster at u14 level in 1997, at u 16 level in 1999, and at under 18 level 2002. Up to 100 schools can enter these competitions, so these achievements are quite striking. In the branch competitions, the school has won 11 league titles since 1987 , which is the 2nd highest level of achievement in the region  from the schools currently participating in the competition which numbers 22.

Perhaps the pinnacle of our achievements was in 1999 when the school won the All Ireland Soccer title, beating Nagle Community College, the Munster Champions.

Girls soccer has also been popular. Whilst there are no teams currently in soccer competitions the school has also won girls provincial competitions.

Several of our past pupils have played for the Irish schools soccer team in International matches since 1998 .Amongst them are Paul Gaughran, Ultan McCabe, Ciaran Cavanagh, David Fairclough, Cormac Malone, and Seamus McCabe.

The 2005-2006 Season was a disappointing one in terms of success, but in terms of participation it was enjoyable. The record was as follows for the various teams.

U14
The record for the season was played 7 won 4 lost 3.The Marist got to the final of the North Leinster Competition, only to be beaten 3-1 by Skerries Community College, conceding 2 goals in the last minute. Thus unfortunately the Marist had to relinquish the trophy they won the previous year. In the Cup the team were beaten in the 2nd round 2-1 by Larkin Community College, again by a goal conceded late in the game. This team has great promise for future years.

Under 16 boys soccer

A disappointing year for the under sixteen's boys soccer team this year. Our first game was away to St. Oliver's, Ardee. It was a tough game against a very strong side. At the break we were 2-0 down but after a spirited performance in the second half where we dominated possession we were caught on the break and conceded a decisive third.
Our next game was at home to the De La Salle, Dundalk. With a much stronger unit we began to dominate early, however missed chances were to prove crucial. In the second half one of our influential midfielders David Maloney, was harshly dismissed which swung the impetus in the De La Salle's favour. We were held to a 1-1 draw.
Our final game of the league was home to Colaiste Ris. Already out of the competition at this stage, we were playing for pride against our old rivals. Ironically we played our best football of the tournament and ran out 5-1 winners.
Barry O'Brien had an excellent season as captain showing great determination and leadership qualities. Other excellent performers were midfielders Jason Mok who got a call up to the under sixteen Irish international squad, and David Maloney.
